So, about two weeks ago, my girlfriend Chellie came out for a visit. I hadn’t seen her since I was home a month ago for my sister’s high school graduation when she came up to the UP, so having her out in Seattle with me was a very welcome change of pace πŸ™‚

She came in on a Thursday night, so we didn’t have time to do anything that night except get her unpacked and fall asleep haha. I of course still had work while she was out here, so she hung out at my apartment while I was off programming. But I came home and then we went out to dinner at a nice Italian place and had a delicious meal :). Afterwards we came back to my place and watched The West Wing (we watched a lot of that over the course of a couple weeks, just a heads-up).

Saturday we faced plans to meet up with our friend Kat that ultimately fell through (unfortunately), but Chellie and I had a good lunch and then we took a neat harbor cruise as part of the Seattle City Pass (great deal if you make it to 4 or more places listed). I have some photos from it, I’ll have to get them up into my Seattle Summer album soon. But the tour was really cool! The narrator guy was pretty funny and did a nice job of telling us what we saw (like the big cranes to load and unload huge cargo ships!), so we enjoyed that. After that we wandered around Pike Place Market for a bit (yea, we watched them throw the fish, which was totally awesome), then caught a bus home. Probably watched more West Wing at that point πŸ™‚

Sunday we went back downtown and hit the Seattle Aquarium. It was really neat πŸ™‚ Saw some cool fish, birds, and otters (Chellie’s favorite). After we finished up there we went back to Pike’s Place and picked up some Alaskan King River Salmon and took it home to make dinner. That salmon was DELICIOUS. Not fishy at all but a very great flavor. We had fun making it (even through we were worried it wouldn’t turn out haha). Delicious salmon πŸ™‚

Monday I had to go back to work; when I came back we pretty much sat around (we had done a lot of walking the last couple days). More West Wing!

Tuesday, also after work, we did more sitting around, but this time we picked up Chinese food! It was delicious, and we had fun πŸ™‚

I think this is a good place to stop. Tomorrow I’m heading to Mount Si to go on a hike with some interns, and then probably more games. Watch for part 2 coing soon!

I wish i could talk about my work more. Unfortunately that would be a huge breach of the contract I signed at the start of this internship; I could blame that as the reason that I don’t update much, but it’s mostly because I a) I’m lazy and b) I don’t do a hell of a lot.

This is a fairly typical day. I wake up, work out, shower and eat, and I get in to work at about 10. Next I catch up on some email and wait for my desktops to be ready. After that I usually try and pick up from where I left of the previous day, doing whatever it was. I’ll sometimes have a good idea after I leave, and if I do I’ll get to work straight away on it. Otherwise I’ll just keep pushing ahead until I hit a wall or I get whatever it is working. At noon, almost always exactly on the dot, our senior team member asks who wants lunch. We usually get 3 or 4 people on our team to come eat with us, and we’ll walk to somewhere close to the office.

Lunch usually takes about an hour or so, so we come back and get to it at about 1. Sometimes I’ll have one or two meetings in the afternoon, either with my manager (we have weekly one-on-one meetings to assess my progress and how things are going overall) or my mentor (usually relating to the project I’m currently working on). The rest of the day is spent working, and if I need a brain-break the interns here have set up an IRC (Internet Relay Chat for you non-techies) chat room. Things are usually pretty interesting but they can get a little slow if a lot of people are tied up.

I’m usually out around 6, though I have stayed a lot later and left a lot earlier depending on how things are going; if I’ve started something automated that will take a few hours to run and there’s nothing else to do, I can knock off. I’ve stayed late a few times to get things done.

I’ll leave and walk home, get back and make some dinner. Then usually I’ll talk to Chellie for a while, we may watch an episode of The West Wing. Since I’m 3 hours behind, she’s usually in bed a lot later than I am, so I catch up on TV and movies that I’ve been meaning to watch. Also, games. A LOT of games. Bed usually between 12 and 1 πŸ™‚

That’s it for the general stuff. The last couple weekends have been a lot busier! Read more

I’m In Seattle.

May 29, 2011 | Category: Miscellaneous | Leave a Comment

First off, this summer I hope to do some redesigns on this site. Focus more on the site as a gallery and less of using the blog as a gallery. I don’t know when this will happen but it’ll probably take all summer; I need to learn (and re-learn) a lot about web design πŸ™‚

Second: The title says it all. I’m in fucking Seattle. Working at fucking Amazon.com. Holy. Fucking. Shit. [Excuse my language. I’m just really excited]

If you had asked me a year ago what I’d be doing in 2011 for summer, I honestly probably would’ve said staying home again. Internships weren’t even on my radar. Not really sure what changed between then and October last year. One of my professors telling us to go to the career fair, maybe? Or just realizing that I needed to do something, to “find my Death Star” to quote Fanboys (great movie, see it!).

So I’m in Seattle, working at the biggest online retailer around, doing stuff I’m not allowed to talk about. No, seriously. All I can say is I’m in the Kindle department. I’m in the 2nd-highest top-secret part of Amazon; if you don’t work in my building, you can’t come in. The only place more secret that I’m aware of is the 5th floor of my building; even if you work in the building you need to actually work on the 5th floor to get up there. You have to swipe your ID badge in the elevator and everything.

It’s been a little over 2 weeks since I got to Seattle with my dad. I honestly had no idea what to expect. I was nervous, but it wasn’t the nervous I felt when I went down to Ann Arbor for school for the first time. No, this was a really, REALLY excited nervous. I had no idea what I would end up doing, who I’d be working with, and knowing nobody in and nothing about Seattle. Was I freaked out? Yea. Was I excited? You bet your ass.

For the few days my dad was with me we did the tourist thing; saw the Space Needle, went to Pike’s Place market (totally getting fish from there. SERIOUSLY), and wandered around town. We moved into my place that Saturday, got everything set up and stocked the fridge. First thing we bought? Beer. Hell yea. We ate good food and hung out, which was nice ’cause I haven’t done that with my dad in a while.

Then I started work.

We had orientation the first day. I wasn’t really sure what to expect, but I ended up hanging out with a girl I met who has a similar taste in TV shows (Firefly FTW), and then we watched a presentation of sorts by the recruiters. After that our managers came and picked us up and took us to our respective work areas; I met my team and started sorting out my workspace. As of now, it ended up being one desktop computer running Ubuntu Linux, one desktop running Red Hat Enterprise Linux, one laptop running Windows 7, and a Mac Pro sitting there doing nothing. More on that later.

The first week was really just getting my bearings; how do things work, how does the team work, stuff like that. I discovered Amazon is heavily into a management process called “agile management with scrum”. It boils down to managers aren’t constantly telling you exactly what you need to do; there’s a lot of freedom left for you to explore. We also have scrum meetings every day where we talk about what we did, what we’re going to do, and what’s blocking us from working. It’s an interesting process but I find it works pretty well.

The end of the first week I got my first coding task. It took a lot of research and familiarizing myself with even more systems, how a certain thing worked, and on top of that learning a new programming language to actually write the thing. All told it took about 7 days for that initial task, some of it spend waiting. That project’s basically finished now, it just have to go through something called code review where your peers tell you how much your code sucks, you fix it, and it goes into production. That actually went through, and while I have quite a few nit-picks to change, on the whole it went pretty well πŸ™‚

Last week was basically working on that; I did various other things (tested some small things, talked to my mentor and manager, stuff like that). Then late last week I found out I’d have another assignment that I started today; this one is going to be a lot bigger than the first one, but I’m excited for it πŸ™‚

Outside of work I haven’t done a hell of a lot. The first week some of us interns went to the Cheesecake Factory for dinner, and that was great, but other than that I sat around my apartment and explored the city a little myself. I didn’t mind walking around by myself, I actually enjoyed it πŸ™‚ I took some pictures and I hope to have them up soon. Then last weekend I and some of the other interns I talk to on a semi-regular basis hung out Friday night and watched Firefly (yea, we’re awesome). Saturday night I got together with one of Chellie’s Austrian roommates who was in town (Oliver is pretty damn awesome, by the way). Otherwise….I’ve sat around, caught up on TV shows, played video games, watched movies, and read.

SPEAKING of reading, I bought a Kindle :). My hopes of getting one to keep were unfortunately misplaced, so I picked one up. So far I love it! πŸ™‚ I’ve got a bunch of books on it so far and it’s really great for reading on; easy to read, really light and it stores a ton of books πŸ˜€

That’s it for now. Hopefully some things will be changing soon…

Body Switch-A-Roo

March 10, 2011 | Category: Class, Photo Book | Leave a Comment

For our final project for this photography class, we had to make a flag booklet of pictures. So, I decided to make each flag part of a body. The top row of flags are heads, the middle row of flags is torsos, and the bottom row is legs/feet. Here’s the final product:

Body Switch-A-Roo

Body Switch-A-Roo

I asked my friends to make whatever face they wanted as long as I could get shots of their torsos and legs and let me swap them up. I very much enjoyed doing this one, it was fun seeing what kind of faces they would make and then trying to match torsos to heads and legs. I’m really happy about the way this came out. I hope you enjoy viewing it as much as I enjoyed making it!

Thanks to my friends Aaron, Jamie, Dina, Maple, Anya, Lauren, and Alex, and my girlfriend Chellie, for letting me switch their bodies around!

So, these should’ve been posted a LONG time ago. I apologize for the delay.

These photos were for our photographic multiples assignment. I didn’t do as well on this assignment as I would’ve liked (possibly because I didn’t completely understand it) but I’m happy with the pictures that came out of it.

Multiples 1

The bottom picture on this set is actually the one that went over best. I was just messing around with stuff in my room and decided to that and really liked it πŸ™‚ The picture of the disc is just kinda neat πŸ™‚

Multiples 2

These were taken on the night of the Harry Potter 7 (pt 1) premiere. We had a bunch of time before the movie started (and before they told me I couldn’t take pictures >_>) and I had fun with my camera :). I like the pattern on the carpet, and the cow was just a fun shot in one of those crane games.

Multiples 3

The pinball machine was also at the movie theater, and I liked the reflections and the color on it. Also liked the way the lights played off the bottle in the second picture and the way the bottle distorted the clock in the background.

Multiples 4

I liked getting the close-ups of smaller or strange things. The top picture is a pin I got from Google that lights up, and the second picture is a close-up of my Serenity keychain. I just really liked the focus in the keychain picture, it puts a lot of emphasis on the keychain.

I like these pictures, but not as much as some of the other pictures I posted. However, the next project (posted soon) I really enjoyed πŸ™‚

Tell Me A Story

December 6, 2010 | Category: Class, Narrative | 1 Comment

Would you like to hear a story? Good! It’s story time here on Moments in Time today; my third assignment for my photography class was a “narrative” assignment where we had to use pictures to tell a story. So, let us begin!

Asleep

Asleep

What's that light?/Waking Up

What's that light?/Waking Up

OHMYGOD

OHMYGOD IT'S A MONSTER!

Scared

So Scared...

Epic Battle

Epic Battle/Death of the Monsters

Content Sleep

Narrative Ad Text

The final "picture" of the story

So this story is about a girl who wakes up, freaks out, and fights a monster. Chellie plays the part of the girl, we drew a monster with my laser pointer, and she fought the monster with the sonic screwdriver (prop from Doctor Who) that I bought as part of my Halloween costume. It was my professor’s idea to turn it into a sort of ad, hence the text at the end (be sure to see the enlarged size to read all the text! Doctor Who fans should be amused). This was a pretty fun shoot (except for some reason my cable release wasn’t behaving and it took a few tries to get it to keep the shutter open long enough in BULB-mode for us to draw), and it didn’t take that long. Also, good nerds will notice the Serenity and Red vs. Blue: Reconstruction posters on my wall.

Thanks for checking out the story! I should have the results of our “photographic miniatures” assignment up relatively soon. Until then, happy shooting!

Light Up The World

December 5, 2010 | Category: Class, Light, Night | 1 Comment

It’s that time! Since I’m taking a bit of a break from my studies, I thought I’d put up some more pictures. These have been sitting on the server for a while but until now I haven’t had a chance to do anything with them. So, without further interruption me, here are my photos for my assignment to use LIGHT as the subject.

Golden Fields

Golden Fields

This was the image I printed as my large print for the assignment; it was taken just as the sun was coming over a building by the fountain on North Campus before my class started (I was almost late, but this was worth it!). I love how the light caught the grass and illuminated it while the fountain in the background is still dark. The lens flare is neat, too πŸ™‚

Mixed Signals 1

Mixed Signals 1

This was a fun idea (but it took a while to get!). This was another one of my prints for this critique and it went over really well. I like having both signals in the frame and how you can see both sides of the closer one are illuminated. Getting the timing to get this shot took a while, but it turned out pretty well.

Streaks

Streaks

This was fun, and thankfully there was a decent amount of traffic the night I was shooting! Just set up the camera and wait for some cars :). I love the car that turned and produced the little starburst in the middle-left of the frame when it was facing the camera head-on. You can even see the tops of the cars and not just the headlights!

Temporary Graffiti

Temporary Graffiti

These kinds of shots are just plain fun, because you can draw pretty much anything you want with a laser pointer! I like the way this came out, because it looks like she happened to come across this glowing graffiti (when in reality she was the one that wrote it!). The green makes it a lot easier to see, too. (Critique print!)

Mixed Signals 2

Mixed Signals 2

Another tricky one to time, but it paid off nicely. This was actually the 2nd try for an image like this (the first one was a signal across the street and it was so bright and small that there was no detail). This was also a print for the critique.

Illuminations

Illuminations

This shot is by Elbel Field, looking south towards Revelli Hall. I liked the way the street lamps light up the yellow leaves/seed pods of the trees along the road.

Water Light

Water Light

I loved the way the sun was illuminating the water as the fountain shot up. It made it so bright and more interesting to me.

Patterns on the Wall

Patterns on the Wall

I loved the was the light was coming through the glass fixture and creating the patters on this wall, especially the curves in combination with the square “panels”.

Crime Scene

Crime Scene

My professor really liked this one. This is Chellie laying flat on Elbel Field, and I traced around her with my laser pointer while the shutter was open. It’s like the crime scene photos with the tape, except here the tape is green!

Super-50

Super-50

Another shot from Elbel Field, this time of the painted 50 traced out with the laser pointer. I wanted to do the block-M but a) it was too big to get a good angle on and b) a green block-M is just wrong haha.

Upside-Down Signals

Upside-Down Signals

So this was the first shot I tried to get of a signal with both parts illuminated, but obviously the signal got washed out. The fun thing is, a little down and left from the signal you can actually see the pictograms from the signal illuminated and upside-down! I think it was from a reflection inside my lens, and I think it looks kinda neat πŸ™‚

Fields of Fire

Fields of Fire

My final picture is of burners on my stove. I lit the back burner (I was already cooking macaroni and cheese with the front burner) and tried to focus on the front burner. The auto-focus on my camera ended up getting the back burner instead, but I didn’t change to manual and do it myself; I liked the sharper detail in the back but having to look through the front burner to see it.

And that’s all I have! My narrative assignment is also up on the server already but I’ll have to find the time to make another post because it’s time to get back to school work and my programming assignment. Happy shooting, everyone!

Scavenger Hunt

October 4, 2010 | Category: Class, Night, Scavenger Hunt | 4 Comments

We had our first critique for my photography class last Wednesday. Know what that means? Time to post some of the shots! Our first assignment was a “conceptual” scavenger hunt; it’s conceptual because we weren’t looking for “shoes” or “a person on the streets”, but instead “a dream” or “irony” or “hate”. I turned in 68 shots on a contact sheet for the assignment, and below are some of my favorite shots. Be warned, there are quite a few!

Ritual of the Bus

Ritual - Daily Bus Rides

This first shot I really like because of the contrast in the image: the interior of the bus is static, but you can see the motion on the outside in the blur. This was my intent for this shot, and I really like the way it turned out. My only problem is that I really wanted that seat to be empty, because I thought it might look better, but having that woman in the shot did turn out nicely.

Inception

A Dream - Inception

This was the first idea I had for the scavenger hunt, and it was entirely based on the movie Inception (which was a fantastic movie, by the way); I drew my inspiration from Cobb’s totem, the spinning top. I thought the Cube on campus here in Ann Arbor would look really neat as a long exposure, so I tried it out, and really liked the result (except for the overexposed sky, but oh well). This, then, lead me to the next shot…

Inception Plus

A Dream - Inception+

Again, inspired by Inception, but I really wanted to make it even more dream-like, so I grabbed some of my friends and asked them to walk slowly through the shot as the shutter was open. My one qualm with this shot (again, besides the overexposed sky) is that the cube isn’t entirely visible (there’s a blue blur of a person in front of it) but the trails of people walking and the multiple legs/feet just looks really cool to me.

Silence

The Silence of an Unanswered Question

This shot was for “Silence”. I’d like to note that I did not add this question mark, these are scattered around Ann Arbor spray-painted on just about anything. My main idea for this was “The Silence of an unanswered question”, such as when you ask an awkward question or a difficult question.

Silence

Silence

This is another shot for Silence, but this is a bit more personal for me: this is where the marching band (of which I am a part) rehearses during the week and on gameday mornings. This was taken around 10 at night, and so it’s dark (save for the huge lights) and nobody is around, which is a HUGE contrast to what happens from 445-615 every day. I like the points of light and the reflections in the blacktop, but the main thing for me was just the fact that a place normally so loud and full of life would just be dead silent.

Irony

Irony (I think it would be ironic if we were all made of iron...)

Here we have Irony. Yes, I went for the cheap lolz on this photo, but I enjoyed the humor (and the people I showed it to also enjoyed it). I love the depth of field, how the farther away you get the less in focus everything is. I love the green, too. Bonus points if you recognize the quote in the caption! (Ok, ok, it’s from Red vs. Blue. Yes, I am a nerd)

Intimidation

Intimidation

And to showcase my nerdiness, here’s a picture of a SPARTAN (Emile)! This shot (and the next) is of the statue that came with the Legendary Edition of Halo: Reach, and I thought was a good one for Intimidation.

Intimidation Revisited

Intimidation Revisited

Same statue, different SPARTAN (this is Jun), though you can see Emile on the left there. I really like this shot for Intimidation because the rifle’s lens is in focus instead of the head, and it’s pointing right at the viewer. Certainly would intimidate me!

Inside Out

Under the bell tower on North Campus

Here we have a picture for Inside Out. I was walking by and decided to look at the tiling in the underside of the tower, and saw this sitting there, and decided to snap it. I like the chair sitting outside because I’m not sure why it’s there (so there’s an element of mystery to it) but at the same time on a college campus it’s relatively normal.

Juxtaposition

Life and Death, Together

This image was for juxtaposition. I like the dead flowers right next to the fresh, live flowers. It’s sort of a reminder that not everything is permanent, and that you should appreciate things while they last.

My Messages to South Quad

My Messages to South Quad

I had inspiration for this image right as I was walking out of my door to get to the quad and eat dinner with some of the euphs. The topic is “My message to the world”, so I thought, “Why not turn that into ‘My messages to South Quad’?”. I like the rows of boxes leading from right to left, it almost forces you to look at it again (our eyes traditionally scan from left-to-right, but I think the lines of the mailboxes help pull things back to the left).

A Self-Portrait Before I Was Born

A Self-Portrait Before I Was Born

Once again, I go for the cheap lolz. My friend Anya brought this back from Guatemala with her, and as soon as we got the assignment I knew this would be perfect. There’s nothing particularly artsy about this photo, I just thought it would be absolutely hilarious (and judging from the reactions I got when I a) went to their house to shoot the thing and b) when I showed other people the final shot, it worked pretty well).

A New Perspective

A New Perspective

And another band image! I really like this one, mostly because there are very few people in the world who know what it looks like from the inside of a marching band (much less the Michigan Marching Band), and I think this image captures that pretty well. Unfortunately I couldn’t hold my horn in front of the camera and take a picture at the same time (so it would be a truly first-person view of the band), but just being able to look over the shoulders of the other people there and see down the lines of their instruments is pretty neat.

Light

Light

This picture got the most positive comments at the critique (it was one of my 5 smaller prints). I love the colors reflecting off the stainless steel, and how since it’s not a flat front the reflections are streaks rather than individual points of light (except in the glass, where they are in fact dots). I like the contrast between the two.

Self-Portrait and Light

Self-Portrait and Light

This was taken at the same time as the last one, and I love the reflections of the light coming off the ornament. You can even see me if you look at the picture full-size!

Weight

Weight

This was for “Weight”, simply because of the weight of the ice on the one branch. This was shot at Picnic Rocks in Marquette.

Floating

Floating

This shot is of my sister hurdling for her high school track team (she’s the one in red). I chose it for floating instead of airborne because even though I know, and the viewers PROBABLY know, that they’re actually in motion, the photo allows us to suspend our notions of reality and think that maybe these girls are just floating in place over the hurdle.

A Storm

A Storm

This (along with many, many others) was shot during a sudden rainstorm. The storm itself only lasted about 15 minutes, but the drops were large and it was falling fast. Luckily, I was able to grab my camera and get some awesome shots of the drops hitting the wet table before the rain stopped! I love the time-frozen aspect of this image, capturing something that’s normally so fleeting and fixing it forever.

Constructed Realities

Constructed Realities - Halo in the Summer

And finally, this was shot at a Halo LAN party my friends and I had towards the end of the summer. I chose it for “constructed reality” because while we play the game, unless something happens (like a phone call or the batteries of a controller dying), the game IS our reality, even though it’s entirely constructed and fake. That, and I just like showcasing the nerdiness of me and my friends!

That’s all I’ve got for now. As always, please feel free to leave constructive comments ( positive OR negative, I can always use suggestions!). Bye for now, happy shooting!

Explosions In The Sky

August 22, 2010 | Category: Fireworks, Night | 1 Comment

Yes, I realize it’s the name of a band. The other title I had was “Lights That Shine, Lights That Blind”; I think the band name works better.

When is the best day to see explosions in the sky? Why, the 4th of July of course! What follows are photos I’ve taken in 2009 and 2010 at Michigamme, Michigan’s 4th of July fireworks events.

Lights That Shine

At least 2 separate fireworks lighting up the night

(Yes, this is a repeat from an earlier post, but THIS time it goes with the theme!) I wish I hadn’t cut the top part of the upper firework, but it did allow me to capture the smaller explosions below as well as the light from the launch.

Lights That Blind

A "Blind"-ing flash and fine strands of color

While I almost would have preferred those bright flashes not be there to allow the colors to come out, I like the backdrop of the clouds it provided to the (very fine) strands of color in the trails.

Orange and Blue: Most Overused Colors

These colors are everywhere...

This is a reference to a post somewhere on the Internet I saw a while back, that orange and blue were some of the most overused colors in movie posters and video game art; yet, this was one of my better shots from the night.

New StarCouldn’t come up with a caption for this one, but I love the colors from the top firework; the green is wonderful. The lower firework almost looks like a reflection (I know it’s not, but giving it a quick glance always gives me that “Is it?” feeling).

Light Up The Night

A backdrop of clouds almost obscures blue strands

The caption basically says it all. Again, the backdrop of the clouds provides a nice divergence from the normal black night sky background, but it’s so bright that it almost blots out the strands of color. It is nice to see the little crackles from the higher explosion, though.

Phantom Lines in the Night

Sometimes, reflections in the lens can be cool...

At least, I think its intra-lens reflection. The squiggly fireworks are in and of themselves pretty neat, but the reflections look kind of like phantom fireworks, and I really like the effect.

Fireflower

Just like Super Mario...

The colors, at least [are like Super Mario, and the vague arrangement]. I’m glad this one was fairly centered in the frame (since there wouldn’t have been much else to focus on otherwise) and also that the trail from the launch is visible. It gives the “fireflower” a stem.

Duelling Launches

One caught in the act, one with intent, and one lens flare

I’m glad I didn’t leave the shutter open long enough to catch the second explosion; it kind of leaves you hanging, wanting more.

Ghostly Mirrors

Another intra-lens reflection

I didn’t even really notice these reflections until I went to sort and touch up these photos; there just wasn’t enough time while the fireworks were happening to review any shots. In the end, I’m glad, because I got a neat effect that maybe I would’ve thrown away had I noticed it before. The colors in the actual fireworks are totally overexposed (this was near the end of the show so there were many fireworks being shot off from this location, hence the over-exposure) but the reflections are pretty neat and the colors are not really what you would’ve seen in one of the fireworks in Michigamme.

The Stars and Stripes

Hooray for the Red, White and Blue

And what a shot to close on. A patriotic display on a patriotic holiday; very happy I was able to catch this.

In a few weeks I’ll actually be starting a class on digital photography at the University of Michigan, so hopefully I’ll have some more shots to post! Until then, happy shooting!

I’ve had this handy little PDF sitting in my downloads folder for a while now, but after all of the incidents of BP trying to stop journalists from photographing their buildings or the Gulf oil spill (from PUBLIC PROPERTY), I thought I’d take the time to let everyone know about “The Photographer’s Right”. It’s a little PDF quick-fact sheet made by Bert P. Krages, Attorney At Law that is designed to help photographers understand when their rights are being violated. Hopefully you’ll never have to use this sheet but it doesn’t hurt to be prepared; I plan on keeping a copy in my camera case.

Some highlights include:

  • It IS legal to take pictures of private property from public property. Exceptions may include military installations or nuclear facilities (though generally the exterior is fine, it’s the insides they worry about)
  • Taking pictures of children in public is actually legal
  • Taking pictures of law enforcement officers is legal (as long as you’re in public)
  • They have NO RIGHT to confiscate your film without a warrant/court order

I highly recommend taking a look at this fact sheet for the next time you go out on a shoot. Like i said, hopefully you won’t actually need to use it, but it never hurts to be prepared.

Here is a direct link to the PDF of The Photographer’s Right. Also I have a link to Krages’ website where I originally obtained this PDF: http://www.krages.com/phoright.htm.

Happy shooting, everyone!
